What a year!
Why do we prune apple trees? I can’t believe it’s been a year since releasing 𝙈𝙞𝙣𝙙𝙛𝙪𝙡𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙡𝙡𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝘽𝙚𝙖𝙙𝙨! (https://amzn.to/3kHd77b). The last 12 months have been a whirlwind and I hope to share some of the milestones and key moments this week. One such milestone is related to the interactive keynote I’ve been delivering since 2016. Few know the story of how the keynote led Wiley to reach out to me about writing a book.
I delivered a keynote to 3900 people in Orlando, FL in December 2019 and, unbeknownst to me, someone in the audience shared my story with an acquisitions editor (Michael Campbell) at Wiley who contacted me asking if I had considered writing book. I thought it was a scam at first and didn’t believe it. I thought to myself, “really, some random guy claiming to be from Wiley is reaching out me?!?!” However, after some LinkedIn stalking, I realized the guy was legit and I responded to his note, leading to the book deal.
At that time, I had introduced my unique approach to mindfulness and training the mind for peak performance to about 27,000 people over the previous three years. Now, two years later, I just surpassed 100,000 people who’ve attended the keynote. How did I nearly triple in two years what had previously taken me three years to accomplish?
I pruned my tree. We prune apple trees so the apples on the remaining branches get the most nutrients possible to grow as large as they can. During those first three years delivering my keynote, I was also doing many other things at the same time, diluting my focus and effort. Once I got the book deal, I decided to narrow my focus on one primary line of effort around bringing a widely misunderstood concept to more people. Now, 100,000 people later, I can share that pruning the tree was an effective way to maximize impact.
